I've posted before about my parents loving their holidays in Florida and when I first started to make things with pallet wood, my mum jokingly said that she would love an Adirondack chair. I laughed at the time but I thought I'd have a go at making one ahead of a party they threw a few weeks ago to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
An Adirondack chair seems to be an integral part of Florida beachlife (and perhaps even beyond). There are any number of guides, plans and photos online to help construct one, ranging from simple blocky pallet wood chairs to other that are refined and smooth designs using fine wood. I chose to aim for the middle ground and, with it being for an anniversary present, to comfortably seat two people.
The design ended up being a mix of inspiration from a handful of sources. I felt it was important to get the basic dimensions and angles right from the outset to be certain it would be comfortable as a chair. The other main considerations were that it needed to flat packed as such and be able to fit in the car with five passengers for a four-hour journey.
The build taught me a lot; the importance of longer screws, getting matching pieces of the frame absolutely spot on and a whole host of new techniques that I'd never tried before.
When it came to finishing the chair, I wanted to continue using chalk paint to give it a weathered look but I know that my normal collection of waxes are suited to indoor use only. Fortunately we have a great paint shop near us and Bromborough Paints were able to recommend a matt varnish for outdoor use.
After a lot of huffing and puffing I was pleased with how the chair finished up, as were my parents - I just hope the summer holds so they can enjoy sitting in the sun!
